Prevention and control of Anemia among adolescent girls

Prevention and control of Anemia among  adolescent girls in 30 villages of pernamalloor Block  of Tiruvannamalai District.

 Objective

The principal objective of the project was to address this critical health issue afflicting large sections of our population and to provide an important component for a strong and effective health policy through tested health development instruments. The project proposed to launch an intensive action programme to identify and correct anaemia among a target group of school going children (age 11-13) in thiruvannamalaiperanamalur area. It was envisaged that as a result of this intervention, by the end of the project, a cohort of vulnerable target group of adolescents and young children in become largely free from anemia, a prime cause of health debility before they enter adulthood.

III. Methodology

(i)               Improving nutritional status: By awareness generation. In our project, awareness generation was made by organising workshops and meetings with students, teachers and parents in each school. Workshops and meetings followed the method of close interactions.

(ii)         Increasing iron intake: daily supplementation of Iron tablets. In our project, each student was administered one iron tablet in school every day. The strategy was to get the students to swallow the tablet in the classrooms in the presence of their teachers. Iron tablets were administered by HHWs under supervision of field workers (supervisors).

(iii)          Controlling infection: By general health check-up and control of infections e.g., hook worm infestation, etc. De-worming was done for all students at the beginning of our programme and also at the end of the programme.
